Picture two villages, side by side. Fifty people in each. Village A grows wheat to share food among the community. Village B grows the same crops, but has a ruler who has set up a “share-crop” system to sell back to the people.
Both Villages work hard — sixty hours a week —and everyone gets by. In Village A there's enough to eat, a little left over for trade, but not much more. Nobody is desperate. That's the baseline: modest, steady, equal. In Village B, the ruler gets to decide the exchange rates. The people in Village B never seem to get ahead.
Then someone invents a more efficient plow....
